What is a Safety Action Plan?

A Safety Action Plan is a document that identifies potential hazards, explains how to prevent them, and establishes procedures to manage and reduce risks. It incorporates community feedback to address local safety concerns and helps make communities eligible for SS4A grant funding to support safety improvements.

Why is a Safety Action Plan needed?

A Safety Action Plan is essential for reducing traffic fatalities and injuries by identifying and addressing high-risk areas through data-driven strategies. The plan will provide a comprehensive approach to road safety by integrating engineering improvements, enforcement, and education. Overall, a Safety Action Plan will lead to long-term improvements in road safety, helping to reduce accidents and enhance the quality of life.

What is SS4A?

The Safe Streets and Roads for All
(SS4A) program is a federal initiative established to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries across the United States. It is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's broader efforts to improve road safety through targeted funding and strategic planning.

What are the main objectives of Safety Action Plan?

  • Identify: Analyze crash data, traffic patterns, and safety concerns to pinpoint high-risk areas.

  • Plan: Develop targeted interventions, including engineering improvements, enforcement strategies, and educational programs. Implement: Work with local stakeholders to execute recommended safety measures.

  • Evaluate: Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the interventions and make necessary adjustments.

Who are the key stakeholders in this project?

CSKT is in the initial stages of developing the Safety Action Plan and will collaborate with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), local governments, community organizations, emergency services, and schools to create a comprehensive and effective plan. Community engagement and input is essential in developing the right plan.

How is this project funded?

This project is primarily funded through the competitive SS4A grant program through the US Department of Transportation, with CSKT contributing a modest matching amount.

When will construction begin?

Construction is not part of this
project's scope. This project specifically focuses on developing a Safety Action Plan that will prioritize future construction projects and support future grant funding requests.
